An In-Depth Look at the Ford Raptor

An In-Depth Look at the Ford Raptor

The Ford Raptor has been around for some time now. It came to the market back in 2010 as the highest-performance version of the F-150, transforming the model into more than a work-focused pickup truck. In fact, the Ford F-150 Raptor nameplate has almost become a brand in and of itself, largely due to its high-speed off-road performance capabilities.

Let’s be honest, very few other trucks can even come close to matching what the Ford Raptor has to offer. It’s no wonder why the 2021 model won Four Wheeler’s Pickup Truck of the Year. The truck is loaded with power and features.

Though some will argue that each new version of the truck doesn’t do much to improve upon the “classic,” it’s still a great ride and a great buy. So many components are exclusive to the Ford F-150 Raptor that you don’t want to mess around with perfection. Honestly, it begs the question, why fix what’s not broken?

Under the Hood

The Ford Raptor touts a 450-hp twin-turbo, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine that’s connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. For those not in the know, that means an impressive output. It’s probably one of the quickest trucks on the market today. You can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in as little as 5.6 seconds.

The only drawback to such power can be found in its fuel economy. The Ford Raptor gets anywhere from 14 to 15 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 16 to 18 mpg on the highway — depending largely on the choice of trim.

Behind the Cargo Bed

Towing capacity can be a big question when it comes to a high-performance pickup truck. With the Ford Raptor, it tops out at around 8,200 pounds. The maximum payload clocks in at 1,400 pounds — an improvement of about 200 pounds from the previous year.

Full disclosure: Other F-150s can tow more weight if that’s the reason you’re going with the Ford Raptor. Ford F-150 SuperCrew models, for example, can tow upwards of 10,000 pounds and reach 2,000 pounds of payload capacity.

In the Cab

For the Ford Raptor 2021 price, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that you’re buying a pickup truck that’s fully loaded. The front seats are heated and ventilated with lumbar support. You also get a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, Wi-Fi, voice recognition, built-in navigation, lane-keeping system, reverse sensing system, pre-collision assist, adaptive cruise control, power-adjustable pedals, and keyless entry.

Like any other Ford, you have the option to up your game. With the Raptor, feel free to add trailer reverse guidance, 360-degree camera package, wireless charging pad, heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, and lots more. It’s all in what you want as far as comfort and convenience.

Getting In

With the 2021 model, the Ford F-150 Raptor comes in just one configuration: a four-door, five-seat SuperCrew cab with a 5.5-foot bed. Make no mistake, however, the passenger space in the cabin is ample. Both rows of seats are said to provide over 40 inches of headroom and 43 inches of legroom. That’s pretty roomy.

Safety Comes Standard

As far as safety ratings go, the Ford F-150 Raptor gets five stars — the highest rating available. Much of this is owing to its Co-Pilot 360 suite and active safety features, like the front, driver, and passenger airbags, seat-mounted airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and roll stability control.

Bottom Line

The decision to go with a Ford Raptor is a big one. The Ford F-150 Raptor 2021 price starts at just slightly over $64,000 and can come in at upwards of $115,000. For the 2022 model, the base starts at just under $70,000. As you start adding features, the price will go up. You have the option to get the Raptor Convenience package, Raptor Power Tech package, Raptor Exterior Graphic package, and Raptor Caron-Fiber package, too. Don’t fret though.
